Meta is expanding the use of passkeys across its platforms. Following the introduction of passwordless login on WhatsApp — which rolled out for Android devices in October 2023 and extended to iOS in April 2024 — Facebook is now set to adopt the same modern authentication method. According to Meta’s official announcement, the rollout will begin soon for users on both iOS and Android devices.
A Safer Alternative to Passwords
Passkeys offer a more secure and user-friendly alternative to traditional passwords. Instead of requiring users to remember complex character strings, passkeys rely on biometric authentication methods such as fingerprint scans or facial recognition, combined with a cryptographic key stored directly on the device. Even if a hacker gains access to a public key from a website, they cannot generate or retrieve the corresponding private key. This makes it extremely difficult for attackers to compromise user accounts.
Another key advantage: users no longer have to worry about creating or remembering strong, unique passwords for each service.
Future Expansion Already in the Works
Meta has plans to expand passkey functionality beyond just login. In the future, users will be able to use passkeys to autofill payment details when making purchases through Meta Pay, enhancing both convenience and security. Passkeys are also expected to play a role in protecting encrypted message backups. Furthermore, Meta’s Messenger app is slated to receive passkey integration in the coming months.
Keeping Pace with Industry Leaders
With this move, Meta joins a growing list of tech giants embracing passkey technology. Companies such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and PayPal have all implemented the system into their services over the past two years. Like Meta, these firms are members of the FIDO Alliance, a consortium promoting an open standard for passwordless authentication.
