Sprint will provide Relay Services in Maine

Sprint Accessibility suite of Sprint Corp will deliver Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) and Captioned Telephone (CapTel) services to the state of Maine as it has been chosen by the Maine Telecommunications Relay Service Council (MeTRS) for delivering the services from start of this year.

In order to facilitate the persons who are deaf, deaf-blind, hard of hearing or have speech disabilities making it harder for them to use traditional telephone, MeTRS has been providing a relay service to such persons with hearing or speech impairments which is available round the clock and all the year by dialing 711.  This service, with complete confidentiality, helps the users to communicate by calling through a specialized text telephone and also provides service of a third-party based operator called a relay operator.

The TRS Council, a State body created by legislation, is not only deploys Relay service in Maine but also is responsible to select the provider for State Relay service. It also supervise the service’s expansion plans in the State, and holds the authority to start pilot projects to provide telecommunications services to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Maine. Maine Universal Service Fund runs the finances of the Council.

Advancement in the technology has caused decline in the use of traditional relay services by those who are hard of hearing, but to the other end use of captioned telephones (CapTel) and Relay Conference Captioning (RCC) by such persons has been continuously increasing. And just like traditional relay service, MeTRS also administers the CapTel and RCC.

To anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing, RCC provides those persons services like multi-party conference call or a group conversation in a videoconference to engage in meetings whether in person or remotely by receiving real-time text streamed to any connected device using high-quality captioners like used in CCTV. All the services provided by the RCC to persons having hearing issues are free of cost.
